QUESTION: How do I "renew" my permit? ANSWER: Effective January 1, 2011 to renew you must telephone the Sheriff's Office PRIOR to coming to the office. New procedures require you to make an appointment with the Administrative Assistant handling weapons permits. If you do not do this you may not be able to renew at the office at that time. You can "renew" within 30 days prior to the permit expiration if you have within the previous 11 months attended an approved training class or recieved instruction and passed a "range score by an approved instructor". The new law (SF2379) spells out all of the conditions under which this may be completed.
QUESTION: Do I need a "Permit to Aquire" if I already have a valid concealed weapons permit? ANSWER: No, your valid
concealed weapons permit is all you will need.
QUESTION: What is the cost of a new concealed weapons permit? ANSWER: The new permit is $20.00 and each renewal will
be $10.00 . There is a "wallet size" hard card available as an option for an additional $10 fee.
QUESTION: How long is the permit good for? ANSWER: Five (5) years from the date of issue.
QUESTION: If my permit expires can I continue to carry it loaded on my person or in my car? ANSWER: No, once it expires there is no "grace period"
and you could be sited by law enforcement or Iowa DNR if you are found to have an expired permit and carrying a concealed
weapon.
