Administration

The Administration Division consists of the Sheriff and two deputies and an Administrative Assistant. The Sheriff is elected every 4 years. He is responsible for budget preparation, personnel staffing, general law enforcement duties in the rural areas and assisting city police, county conservation and other law enforcement agencies in carrying out their respective duties. He is responsible for the county jail operations and security to the District Courts and Judges. His duties are outlined in the Code of Iowa.

The deputies have various duties that are above and beyond the regular duties of deputy sheriffs.  The Chief Deputy is in charge of all criminal investigations. When the Sheriff is unable to serve or absent from the county the Chief Deputy is responsible for overseeing all operations of the Sheriff’s Office.  The Lieutenant is in charge of all the civil process served for the District Court System of O’Brien County and other Iowa District Courts.

The Administrative Assistant provides administrative support to all divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. Duties include filing, typing, gun permit registrations & renewals, Sex Offender registration, civil process record keeping and assisting the public at the public counter.
